Brighton Festival Website
Brief In 1964 the first moves were made to hold a Festival in Brighton, and Ian Hunter, the eventual Artistic Director of the Festival, submitted a programme of ideas. This was followed by a weekend conference in 1965, and the Board of the Brighton Festival Society was born. The first Festival was held in 1967, and featured performances by Lawrence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins and Yehudi Menuhin. Brighton Festival, now the largest arts festival in England, is one of the major milestones in the international cultural calendar. Our brief was to create an online destination that positions the Dome and Festival as a leader in arts within the South East. It required a digital platform that struck the balance between inclusive to its audience, whilst championing the power of the arts to enrich lives and inspire creativity. Outcome Our service offer comprises of what we term, the 4 Ds and they represent the project life cycle of every piece of work we undertake. Below provides you with a brief overview of the Festival project and how we applied our 4 D phases. Determine The first phase of our project lifecycle was initiated with a round of internal reviews with staff and interviews with key stakeholders, the findings of which helped shape our approach to the design and delivery process. Design During the design phase we made an active decision to make the Festival site fully responsive. This design approach allowed us to add an element of future proofing for the Festival, with the added benefit of optimising the site for both desktop, tablet and mobile devices. The homepage was designed as a set of floating, ever changing windows that allow users to quickly browse a number of events without clicking deeper into the site. Based on a flexible, responsive grid format, it also serves as a digital billboard for Festival staff, upon which to promote events of note by assigning large, medium or small spaces based on event priority or promotional status. A user centric approach to the site was always going to be core to its success, and as the Festival only runs for a finite period, (3 weeks) we needed to ensure we catered for the different type of users that historically book online. Users are therefore invited to browse and book events in 3 different ways; via an interactive calendar with quick filter, via the event type which utilises Harrison & Co's iconography, alternatively for users that have already browsed the brochure or know exactly what events they want, a site wide search is also available. Develop The Development phase included the integration of the Festivals 3rd party ticketing system - Audience View, which handles all of the online bookings, ticketing and customer relations. Deliver The final Delivery stage saw the site developed using our proprietary content management software - You.Create. The software allows staff complete control over every element of the site, including the creation and manipulation of the homepage grid and full integration with over-ride functions within their ticketing system - Audience View.
